Using Video in the 21st-century classroom

How can videos help students learn a second language?

This talk focuses on the advantages of using video in the classroom with 'Generation Z' students and the importance of developing media literacy as a 21st-century skill. It looks at the different types of videos that can be used, including ELT and non-ELT examples, as well as discuss the variety of activities and exercise types that can be used alongside them, in order to appeal to different learner types, promote motivation and encourage second language acquisition. It also discusses the pros and cons of the Flipped Classroom approach and exchange views and ideas on developing best practice.

Objectives

  • To give details about how all learning strategies can be involved when using a video
  • To show strategies about how videos can be used during a lesson to reach the competences required by M.I.U.R. and the European key competences
  • To exemplify how students can easily understand dfferent cultures and lifestyles and how this can encourage them to become active citizens
  • To illustrate how videos can be exploited in a Flipped Classroom approach
  • To encourage discussion and the exchange of the best teaching practices

Programme

First session

  • Using a video as a tool in the language classroom
  • How videos involve all learning styles
  • How videos improve skills such as: communication in a foreign language, critical thinking, collaboration, global awareness, understanding different cultures and lifestyles and enhancing the four essential skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)

Second session

  • How to use videos during a lesson. The speaker will offer clear and concrete examples
  • Have your say! A chance to exchange views and ideas with colleagues

Duration

3 hours in presence

Possibility of organizing the seminar in mixed form with a total duration of 4 hours of which 1 hour online
